Abstract:Ti-based alloy ingots are susceptible to suffering with high temperature oxidation during heat treatment and cracking during forging. So glass-based coatings are used to protect the Ti-based ingots. It can simultaneously increase the oxidation resistance of the ingots and make a positive effect on lubrication during forging. Moreover, the glassbased coating can make a thermal insulation effect due to its low thermal conductivity, which is also beneficial for forging. In this investigation, the development status of the glass-based coatings for Ti-based alloy ingots, including the designing principle, chemical composition, preparation method, mechanisms of high temperature protection and lubrication, interfacial reactions between the coating and the substrate were reviewed. Furthermore, the development direction of the glass-based coating for Ti-based alloy ingots was discussed as well.
