Glass Forming Ability and Corrosion Behavior of Ti-Zr-Be-Cu-Co Bulk Metallic Glass

    Abstract:

    Ti35Zr30Be24Cu7.5Co3.5 bulk amorphous alloy was prepared by a copper mold casting method. The structure and thermal stability of the bulk amorphous alloy was investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Its corrosion resistance was evaluated by conducting electrochemical corrosion test and variable temperature weightless corrosion test. Results show that the as-prepared Ti35Zr30Be24Cu7.5Co3.5 alloy exhibits an amorphous structure with at least 12 mm diameter, and has a high glass forming ability and a good thermal stability. The corrosion behaviors of Ti35Zr30Be24Cu7.5Co3.5 bulk amorphous alloy and the 304 stainless steel were investigated by an electrochemical method in 0.6 mol/L NaC1 solution and by variable temperature weightless corrosion in 313 K and 333 K 1mol/L HCL solution. Compared with the 304 stainless steel, the Ti35Zr30Be24Cu7.5Co3.5 bulk amorphous alloy has a better corrosion resistance
